Mixed emotions

A real turbulent week for Yorkshire’s footballing contingent with some amazing wins and some demoralising defeats.

The main talking point continues to be Phil Brown’s Hull City side as they continue to take the Premier League by storm. West Brom were the latest side to succumb to the newly promoted side after goals from Kamil Zayatte, Giovanni and Marlon King gave the Tigers a 3-0 victory at the Hawthorns.

Phill Browns side have surprised everyone this season.

Yorkshire’s other top flight outfit, Middlesbrough conceded a late Benni McCarthy goal at Ewood Park as they were held to 1-1 by Blackburn Rovers.

Gareth Southgate has the right to feel aggrieved after they had a Sanli Tuncay bicycle kick wrongly disallowed for offside.

However the points seemed to be secure after Afonso Alves had found the net in the second half but in the fourth minute of stoppage time McCarthy nodded in from a corner to rescue a point for the Lancashire club.

In the Championship Sheffield Wednesday went down 3-1 at high flying Birmingham City.

Former Vitesse Arnham winger Etienne Esajas was on target in spectacular style for the Owls after he crashed a 25 yard free kick into the Birmingham goal but the Blues proved too strong.

The red half of Sheffield meanwhile continued their good run of form with a 1-0 victory over Preston at Bramall Lane. Ugo Ehiogu scored the only goal of the game for Kevin Blackwell’s side.

At Oakwell Barnsley held Bristol City to a goalless draw while Doncaster continue to struggle at the foot of the table after they conceded two late goals at Carrow Road to go down 2-1 against Norwich City.

Leeds United continued their promotion challenge in League 1 with a comfortable victory over Walsall at Elland Road. Fabian Delph (see talent scout) was the star of the show after he scored a spectacular brace to help the Whites to 3-0 victory.

Huddersfield Town slipped down the table after they were thumped 4-0 by Peterborough at London Road. Highly rated Aaron McLean bagged a brace and to compound the Terriers misery skipper Chris Lucketti saw red late in stoppage time.

Rotherham continue to climb up the League 2 table with a 2-1 away victory over Macclesfield. Dale Tonge and Ian Sharps were on target for Mark Robins’ side.

Elsewhere Bradford City secured an impressive 3-1 away victory over Grimsby on Friday night.

Finally York City were held to a 0-0 draw in an FA Cup qualifying tie against Manfield Town.
