Talent scout – Fabian Delph

Name – Fabian Delph
Age – 18
Position – Central Midfield
Current Club – Leeds United
Previous Clubs – Bradford City

Despite Leeds United’s widely publicised problems and decline from the top, they look set to continue their trend of developing fantastic young talent with young midfielder Fabian Delph catching the eye.

Through recent years the likes of James Milner, Alan Smith and Aaron Lennon have all come through the academy at Elland Road and they continue to ply their trade in the Premiership to this date. With a wide array of skills Delph looks set to be another product of the Leeds academy who is set to grace the top flight of English football.

The first time I saw Delph in a Leeds shirt was on the final day of the 2007-2008 campaign in a 2-1 victory over Gillingham at Elland Road when he made a substitute appearance in the second half. This cameo appearance coincided with a sparkling display in a 5-2 win earlier this season against Crewe led me to believe that the 18 year old really is going to develop into something special. Delph did in fact cap that wonderful performance against Crewe with his first goal for the club, a spectacular low drive from all of 30 yards.

His tall slender frame was always demanding of the ball and towards the end of the game he seemed to have endless amounts of energy as others around him began to look jaded. A fantastic first touch combined with composure on the ball make the young midfielder more then capable at playing anywhere across the midfield.

Not only is Delph technically gifted, he looks an instrumental character on the pitch. Delph captained the Leeds reserve side at the tender age of just 17 and now as a regular starter for the first team his fellow colleges seem more than willing to give him the ball.

Rumours circulated that a wide variety of Premiership clubs were in for Delph over the summer of 2008, with the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle and Sunderland all linked with the midfielder. However amid all the speculation Delph agreed to sign a contract with Leeds till 2012.

His talents have also been noted on the international stage by England U19 head coach Brian Eastick. He has appeared twice for the England youngsters in recent times and bookmakers have already set odds on how many full England caps Delph will earn. You can get 5-1 if you think the Leeds hotshot will earn a full England cap before the end of 2012 and there’s even 40-1 for him to earn 50 or more caps.

Currently plying his trade in League 1, the only way is up for Delph, be it with or without Leeds United.
