Address – Galpharm Stadium, Huddersfield, HD1 6PX

Year opened - 1995

Other names - Alfred McAlpine Stadium

The Galpharm Stadium is a relatively new ground opening in 1995 and is home to Huddersfield Town and the local rugby league team the Huddersfield Giants.

The stadium was known as the Alfred McAlpine, after the company that built the stadium. Though after their ten year deal sponsoring the stadium ran out, Galpharm Healthcare took up the spot.

This stadium is different to most with each stand having a semi-circular look, rather like an open oyster. The ground has a couple of two tiered stands, one along the side of the pitch and one behind one goal, and two single tiered stands.

Here is some more information that might be of use to you.

We’re thinking of coming on the train. Is this a good idea?

Yes. The trains in and out of Huddersfield are very frequent and it has good links straight to either Leeds or Manchester. Also the trains are usually quite cheap and affordable. The stadium is about a 15 minute walk down the main road from the station.

Is there anywhere away fans can drink near the ground?

Yes, but be careful about which pubs you go in. Immediately on your right as you walk out of the train station is the Angel of Islington pub which is best avoided if your are a visiting supporter. Countless times I have walked passed and sensed a tense atmosphere, especially after their team have lost. A little nearer the ground is the peculiarly named Gas Club which does welcome away fans and has an accompanying car park, priced at £2. There is also a number of pubs along Leeds Road as you approach the ground as well as one in the nearby entertainment complex called the Rope Walk, though this again does not allow away fans.

What’s car parking like around the ground?

The club has quite a large park at the back of the away stand which is available at £5 per car. There are a fair number of other small parking outlets in and around the ground and it shouldn’t prove a problem.

Where are the away fans seated?

The away fans are housed in the Pink Link South Stand which holds around 4,000. The facilities are good, as you would expect with all new stadiums. Legroom is relatively generous and there is a spacious concoursewith all the usual food and drinks available. There is also a Ladbrokes betting stand if you fancy putting your money where your mouth is.

Last but least, how much is the programme?

The matchday magazine will set you back £3.

Leeds United and Bradford City faced off at Valley Parade, with new signing Stan Collymore making his Bantam debut.

Collymore had but Bradford one up with that spectacular overhead-kick (see video) only for Mark Viduka to save Leeds’ blushes with a late equalizer.

Though Collymore’s career didn’t last long after that, only making a handful of appearences for Bradford before struggling in Spain with Real Oviedo.

Stan now works as a pundit for newspapers such as Daily Mirror and a presenter for radio station TalkSport.

Tenants - York City

Capacity - 9,196

Address - Bootham Crescent, York, YO30 7AQ

Year opened – 1932

Other names - Bootham Crescent

KitKat Crescent is the home to struggling Conference outfit York City and has been since 1932. Housing just under 10,000 the stadium is located in the residential streets on the outskirts of York.

The stadium has one main grandstand which is all seated which takes up about two thirds of the touchline. Opposite this is the peculiarly named Popular Stand which is also all seated.

Behind either goal are two sets of terracing. The David Longhurst stand is where the vast majority of noise is generated from the home fans.

Away fans are situated in the Grosvenor Road End which is again, all terraced. The ground has a pleasant feel and when full a good atmosphere can be generated.

Here is some more bits of information that might be of interest to you.

We’re coming up for a game and want to make a weekend of it. What else can we do in and around the city?

The city York is a beautiful place and you could easily spend a day or two wandering the quaint streets and gardens. The centrepiece is without doubt York Minster where tours are available at a price. The castle walls also line the city and sections can be walked free of charge giving spectacular views.

What’s the ground like for parking?

Parking in the city centre is not advised as they are small and very expensive. A limited number of street parking is available around the ground but the residential streets are very small and often crammed with cars. The best advise is to arrive early and find parking in and around the residential areas

How far away is the train station from the ground?

The train station is a good 20 minute walk away from the ground. Though the walk is scenic, lining the castle walls for part of the stroll.

We’re away fans and after a drink. Where can we go?

The supporters club which overlooks the away end does welcome away fans for a small donation of 50p. The nearest pub to the ground is the Burton Stone Inn which is along the A19. Further afield there are plenty of pubs in the city centre.

What is the food like in the ground?

Surprisingly enough KitKats and various other chocolate bars are available in the ground. The other usuals such as meat pies, mushy peas and burgers are all also available at the usual prices.

Finally I want something to read on the journey home. How much is the matchday programme?

The matchday magazine will set you back £3.

GARETH SOUTHGATE’S Middlesbrough side now find themselves five points from safety after being hammered 4-1 at Bolton.

The other top flight Yorkshire side Hull City played out what ex-Liverpool assistant Phil Thompson described as a ‘dire 0-0 stalemate’ on Soccer Saturday.

In the Championship there were wins for both Sheffield clubs with United looking good for automatic promotion. The Blades saw off Ipswich at Bramall Lane whilst the Owls defeated Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road.

Barnsley picked up what could prove to be a crucial point at home to Nottingham Forest whilst Doncaster slipped to a home defeat at the hands of Watford.

In League 1 Leeds United continued their good run of form with a 1-0 away win at Colchester whilst Huddersfield lost by the same scoreline at home to Southend.

Bradford saved a late point against table-toppers Brentford in League Two whilst York lost to Grays in the Conference.

FOURFOURTWO has finally lifted the curtain their opinion of the top 50 players outside the Premiership.

Yorkshire’s contingent of Football League clubs were well represented in the annual list, with seven players making the cut.

Here is the run down of who made the grade.

21. Fabian Delph, Leeds United – Not only did the young Leeds midfielder rank as the highest Yorkshire-based player in the Football League, but was the highest player aged under 21, meaning he picked up the Football League Young Player of the Year award.

Naughton is certainly proving to be one to watch.

24. Kyle Naughton, Sheffield United – This young full-back looks to have a bright future ahead of him. At just above the halfway point of the top 50, the 20-year-old already has two England under-21 caps. After a loan period at Gretna in Scotland last season he seems to have returned much more mature and has now cemented a place in Kevin Blackwell’s starting lineup.

26. Matthew Kilgallon, Sheffield United – Despite initially finding it hard to work his way into the side under then manager Neil Warnock, Kilgallon has now tied down a first team spot and become a regular for the Blades.

36. Jermaine Beckford, Leeds United – A goal ratio of one in two during his time a Leeds speaks volumes. Constantly linked to another club Beckford has stayed put and is arguably playing some of the best football of his career.

Wednesday's Marcus Tudgay is really enjoying his football at the moment.

37. Marcus Tudgay, Sheffield Wednesday - The 26-year-old Wednesday striker has become a firm favourite at Hillsborough. Scoring the winning goal against arch rivals Sheffield United did no harm for his popularity and he comes in at 37 in the list.

42. Brian Stock, Doncaster Rovers – His career seemed to have stalled after his move from Bournemouth to Preston in 2006 but it is firmly back on track now after some glittering performances for Doncaster. The highlight of his year is surely captaining Rovers to their playoff final triumph over Leeds at Wembley last May.

45. Tommy Spurr, Sheffield Wednesday – Another who is tipped for great things in the not too distant future is Wednesday’s young defender. Another who did his reputation the world of good by netting in the first minute of the Steel City derby last February has also captained the side in the absence of Richard Wood.

For the full run down of the top 50 click here.

Speaking after receiving the award, Delph said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get this award in my first full season of regular first team football.

“The players around me have been a big help and people like our last manager Gary McAllister, who spent a lot of time in meetings with me telling me how I can improve my game, have been a big driving force.

“After starting the season well we had a bit of a dip, but we’ve come back strongly and hopefully I can now help us get promoted to the Championship.”

More to come from the FourFourTwo Football League awards later.

Tenants – Bradford City

Capacity - 25,136 (all seated)

Address - Valley Parade, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD8 7DY

Year Opened - 1886

Other Names - Coral Windows Stadium

IT WAS not so long ago that Bradford City were in the Premier League. But now they find themselves in League 2 and Valley Parade has seen a lot of sides over the past decade.

The stadium is dominated by the Carlsberg Stand which towers over the pitch and creates a good sense of a big occasion. The stand that runs along side the pitch is the East Stand which is fairly well constructed despite being vastly inferior to the huge Carlsberg Stand. Finally the TL Dallas Stand is the smallest stand in the ground and is a strange looking two decked stand behind one of the goals.

The stadium and the city go hand in hand and are way too big for League 2. It might not be long before we see Bradford back on the rise.

Here is a little bit more information if you are thinking of going.

I’m a Leeds fan and anticipating a big following. What’s the allocation like?

Away fans are now housed in the East Stand which runs alongside the pitch. Usually the allocation is around 1,300 but can easily be extended to around 1,700 if needed.

Where can we park?

Around the ground there is a lot of street parking to be had. If you have problems finding this, alternatively you can park in the city centre and walk out to the ground which takes around 15 minutes.

If we come on the train, how far away is the ground?

The stadium is about a 25 minutes walk from the train station so you might be best to catch one of the buses going in the direction of Bradford Forster Square, which is about a 10 minute walk from the ground.

I’m a Huddersfield fan and I need a beer.

There are plenty of watering holes in and around Valley Parade, most of which welcome away fans. The Carlton pub is located behind the away stand and is about 10 minutes away from the ground. Further afield there are one or two hotels with bars that are usually more then happy to have away fans. The Park and Cartwright hotels are about a 10 minute walk down the main road.

It’s half time, we’re 3-0 down. I need comfort food.

You can but pies inside the ground for £2 but apart from that there isn’t much else. On my visit they were only selling pies and one or two other bits. Food spots outside the ground are a little sparse so if you are travelling from the city centre, you might want to pick up something there.

How much does the match programme cost?

The matchday programme will cost you £2.50.

Video – pitch scan from the TL Dallas Stand
